Introduction

I received an urgent call early one morning asking me to drive a member of our congregation to a hospital in Philadelphia. He was new to our church and had recently revealed he had only a year to live due to cancer. On the way, he shared his struggle from the night before. He recounted a heartfelt conversation he had with God, grappling with the reality of his limited time. He was wrestling with the thought of leaving his family behind. During that emotional moment, he felt as if God asked him, “Can you care for them better than me?” That question hit him deeply. He realized then that God could care for his family better than he ever could. In that moment, he found a sense of peace. This was his “Gethsemane moment” – that is, a turning point involving a deep crisis of faith. My friend passed away a few months later, and I had the honor of leading his memorial service.

—————-

The experience I describe in my introduction, while deeply personal for my friend, served as a powerful reminder to me about the nature of our trials and the opportunities they present for deepening our relationship with God.

Trials, as we know, are an inevitable part of our human experience. Jesus Himself said, "In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world" (John 16:33). This assurance does not mean we will be exempt from difficulties, but we are promised a companion and victor in our struggles.

My friend's journey was marked by a painful "Gethsemane moment," a term that draws us back to the night Jesus spent in the Garden of Gethsemane, wrestling with the imminent path of suffering that lay ahead of Him. Like Jesus, my friend faced his moment of overwhelming trial, confronting the reality of his mortality and the inevitable separation from his loved ones.

In his deepest moment of anguish, he encountered a profound question from God: "Can you care for them better than me?" This question wasn't an accusation but an invitation—an invitation to trust, to surrender, and to embrace the peace that comes from knowing our lives and the lives of those we love are in God's capable hands.

This encounter echoes the sentiment found in 1 Peter 5:7, "Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you." It's a call to release our tightest grips, our deepest fears, and our heaviest burdens onto the shoulders of the One who bears the weight of the world with unwavering strength and love.

The realization that God's care far surpasses our own can bring about a transformative peace. This doesn't mean the pain or the problem disappears, but there's a shift in how we carry our burdens and a change in where we place our trust.

My friend's "Gethsemane moment" was not just a turning point for him but also a lesson for me. It reminded me that my darkest moments can become the very places where I experience God's profound presence and peace. It taught me that in my vulnerability and in my surrender, there's an opportunity to grow deeper in my relationship with God.

As you reflect on this story, I encourage you to consider your own "Gethsemane moments." Are you willing to trust God with your deepest fears and greatest burdens? Can you find peace in the assurance that His care for you and your loved ones is perfect and complete?

Let this story be a reminder for you to seek God's presence in your trials, to listen for His voice, and to find comfort in His promise to be with you always, even to the end of the age (Matthew 28:20). In your struggles, may you find not just the challenge, but the invitation to grow deeper in your faith and closer to the heart of God.

Additionally, I'll be sharing insights from different sections of "Embracing Gethsemane" twice a week. If you think others might benefit from this, please share the website www.thechaplainwriter.com with them. Thank you.

Three Discussion Questions

How do you interpret the concept of a "Gethsemane moment" in the context of personal trials? Can you share a personal experience that you would describe as a "Gethsemane moment" and how it impacted your faith?

The idea of surrendering to God's care, as illustrated by the question, "Can you care for them better than me?" can be a challenging concept. How do you understand and apply the notion of surrendering to God's will in difficult times, and what outcomes have you observed from doing so?

Reflecting on the statement, "Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you," how do you practice this in times of stress or uncertainty? Can you provide an example of when placing your burdens on God led to a sense of peace or resolution?

Expressing My Thanks On My Book Writing Journey

I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to write a book that explores what I call "Gethsemane moments"—those pivotal times in our lives marked by intense challenge, decision-making, or personal transformation. These moments, akin to the biblical story of Jesus' night of deep contemplation and struggle in the Garden of Gethsemane, are universal experiences. Each of us, at some point, faces our own Gethsemane, a period that tests our resilience, shakes our foundations, and ultimately shapes our path forward.

My motivation to write Embracing Gethsemane: Navigating Life’s Darkest Moments stemmed from a desire to provide guidance and hope for those who are currently navigating their Gethsemane moments. It's a journey of acknowledgment that while these times are fraught with difficulty, they also offer a unique opportunity for growth and understanding.

However, the process of writing a book is far from a solitary endeavor, especially when self-publishing. It truly takes a village to bring a book to life, and I am profoundly thankful for the team that stood by me throughout this creative process. I would like to thank my first group of readers, who painstakingly went through each chapter, provided invaluable feedback that significantly enriched the content. Their insights and observations were instrumental in shaping the book's final form.

A special thanks goes to Sandy Haney, Ph.D., my editor, whose expertise and keen eye for detail transformed the manuscript. Her ability to rework the text, making it more readable and coherent, while offering numerous suggestions for improvement, was invaluable. Sandy's contributions were pivotal in ensuring the book's clarity and flow, making the complex themes accessible and engaging.

Another significant source of inspiration was Hassan Osman, the voice behind the Writer on the Side Podcast and a proponent of writing while managing a full-time job. His insights into the preferences of today's readers, particularly the appeal of shorter books, influenced my decision to keep the book to five chapters and around 20,000 words.

As the book's launch approaches this Friday, with availability for download on Kindle, my heart is filled with gratitude for everyone who played a part in this journey. From the early stages of conceptualization to the final touches that made it ready for publication, each contribution was a vital thread in the tapestry of this project.

Writing this book has been a profound and transformative journey, not just in exploring the depths of Gethsemane moments but also in experiencing the collective endeavor of bringing a book to life. To all who offered their encouragement, insight, and support, thank you. Your involvement has not only enriched this book but also reinforced the essence of the Gethsemane moments it explores—reminding us that even in our most challenging times, we are never truly alone.

I encourage you to watch for when it becomes available for download on Friday. You can pre-order it ahead of time at a discount of $2.00. This is the link: https://amzn.to/3IwgFHa And finally, if you find the book helpful, write a review and tell others about it. Thank you.

Answering the Question: Why do I suffer like this?

A large container ship recently hit the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland. This caused the bridge to collapse and six construction workers died as they fell into the Patapsco River. The destruction of the Key Bridge will affect the lives of innumerable people for a long time, possibly years. The effect on Maryland's economy and the national economy will take time to determine, and it is impossible to imagine how many people are suffering due to this tragedy.

As a writer, one of my passions has been to explore what it means to suffer and how we endure our trials. This has motivated me to write Embracing Gethsemane: Navigating Life's Darkest Moments, a book born out of a conviction that many of us lack a theology of suffering.

For most of us, suffering is an enigma wrapped in a paradox. We rejoice in the resurrection, yet we often falter when faced with the reality of our suffering—when we, like Christ, feel abandoned and overwhelmed by our circumstances. In these moments we often ask, "Why do I suffer like this?” This question echoes through the ages, resonating with a profound sense of isolation and despair.

Yet, the Bible does not shy away from the theme of suffering. Scripture is replete with instances where people faced immense trials and tribulations. For example, the Apostle Paul's words in Romans 5:3-5, "Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope." Here, Paul’s perspective on suffering is counterintuitive to our natural inclinations. He suggests suffering is not an anomaly to be avoided at all costs but a pathway to deeper understanding and, ultimately, to hope.

In Embracing Gethsemane: Navigating Life’s Darkest Moments, I seek to guide readers through these dark moments, offering a process to understand and engage with their suffering in a biblically grounded and deeply personal way. The Gethsemane narrative, where Jesus Himself grappled with the weight of what was to come, serves as a profound backdrop for this exploration. It reminds us that suffering is an integral part of the Christian experience, not as a divine oversight or a punishment, but as a way we grow closer to God and more fully embody our faith.

This book is not merely an academic exercise; it is a heartfelt endeavor to provide comfort and understanding to those who are in the throes of suffering. It is an invitation to journey through our trials, not as solitary wanderers but as part of a community of believers who have walked this path through the ages.

For those who are seeking to understand the place of suffering in their lives or looking for a companion in their moments of pain, Embracing Gethsemane: Navigating Life’s Darkest Moments offers a perspective that is both enlightening and empowering. It is a call to embrace our suffering, not as a sign of divine displeasure, but as an opportunity to grow in faith and perseverance.

I am pleased to announce Embracing Gethsemane: Navigating Life's Darkest Moments will be available for download on April 5. For those eager to engage in this journey, the book can be pre-ordered now at a discount of $2.00. In this book, you'll learn how to face life's challenges with faith, courage, and hope. Psalm 23: "You Are With Me"

We often find ourselves in Gethsemane-like moments—times of profound distress, uncertainty, and isolation. It is during these times that the timeless truths of Psalm 23 shine as a beacon of hope, guiding us back to a place of peace and assurance. One particular phrase from this cherished psalm resonates deeply with me: "You are with me" (Psalm 23:4).

When Jesus retreated to the Garden of Gethsemane, he experienced overwhelming sorrow and distress. Facing the imminent ordeal of the cross, he felt the weight of impending suffering and separation. Yet, in his darkest hour, he was not abandoned. This mirrors the assurance we find in Psalm 23, written by King David, who himself faced numerous life-threatening situations. Despite the dangers and the shadow of death, David found comfort in the presence of God: "Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me" (Psalm 23:4).

The phrase "You are with me" is a profound declaration of God's constant presence in our lives. It reassures us that, regardless of the trials we face, we are never alone. God's presence is a constant source of comfort, guidance, and protection. This is particularly poignant during our Gethsemane-like moments when our spirits are crushed, and our hearts are filled with dread.

In such times, the metaphor of the shepherd in Psalm 23 becomes especially significant. Just as a shepherd guides and protects his sheep, God guides us along the right paths, providing for our needs and safeguarding us from harm. The rod and staff, tools of the shepherd's trade, symbolize God's discipline and support. Even in our trials, we are being shaped and supported by a loving Father who desires our ultimate good.

Moreover, Psalm 23 reminds us of the restoration and renewal that God provides: "He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake" (Psalm 23:3). In our moments of despair, God is actively working to revive our weary souls, leading us towards restoration and righteousness. This promise of renewal gives us hope, enabling us to persevere through our trials with the knowledge that our suffering has a purpose and that we are being led toward something greater.

Finally, the psalm culminates in a confident declaration of God's goodness and mercy, which will follow us all the days of our lives. This assurance extends beyond our earthly struggles, pointing us toward an eternal future in God's presence. "I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever" (Psalm 23:6) is not just a statement of faith; it is a promise of God's unending faithfulness and enduring love.

Our Gethsemane-like moments, though often filled with pain and uncertainty, are not devoid of hope. Psalm 23 offers us a profound assurance: "You are with me." In the midst of your trials, you are never alone. God's presence is a constant source of comfort, guidance, and protection. By clinging to this truth, you can navigate your darkest valleys with faith and emerge strengthened, knowing that you are guided by a Shepherd who loves you and is committed to your ultimate good.
