Legacy of Service and Faith: Remembering Chaplain Colonel Gil Stricklin, Founder of Marketplace Chaplains
Yesterday, I had the profound honor of attending the Memorial Service for Chaplain Colonel Gil Stricklin at Arlington National Cemetery. The atmosphere was imbued with solemn respect and deep admiration for a man whose life was a testament to faith, service, and leadership. Gil, who passed away last September and was laid to rest with full military honors in a place as hallowed as his legacy, leaves behind a family who cherished him: his wife Ann, sons Art and Cliff, four grandchildren, and his brother Charles. Their presence, along with that of numerous others, underscored the impact of Gil's life and work.
Gil Stricklin's journey was nothing short of extraordinary. His role as a Special Assistant to Dr. Billy Graham, leadership in youth evangelism for the Baptist General Convention of Texas, and distinguished service in both the Air Force and the Army, including as a Chaplain during Desert Storm and Desert Shield, illustrated his unwavering commitment to his faith and country. His academic and professional achievements, notably being the seventh chaplain to graduate from the US Army War College and conducting nearly 100 funerals at Arlington National Cemetery, spoke to his dedication and the respect he commanded.
Perhaps one of Gil's most enduring legacies is the founding of Marketplace Chaplains with his wife Ann in 1984. This initiative, which now serves over 1,500 companies across the US, Canada, and Mexico, embodies Gil's vision of bringing chaplaincy support to the workplace, where it can profoundly impact employees lives in the workplace.
The memorial service was a moving tribute to Gil's life and ministry. One story shared by an attendee vividly captured the essence of Gil's influence. With just 20 words, Gil had a transformative effect on this man, prompting a deep reflection on life's brevity and the importance of faith. This man's decision to walk with Christ and be baptized by immersion, despite his Lutheran background, highlighted Gil's ability to inspire meaningful spiritual introspection and commitment. It was a powerful testament to Gil's role as a chaplain and mentor, demonstrating his exceptional ability to connect with and guide others towards a deeper relationship with God.
Gil Stricklin lived a life worthy of the divine commendation, "Well done, good and faithful servant." His example challenges us to consider our own lives and the legacy we wish to leave. How do we use our time, talents, and opportunities to serve others and honor God? Gil's life reminds us that our impact can extend far beyond our immediate sphere, influencing countless others and communities.
As I reflect on the service and Gil's remarkable life, I am inspired to think about how I can live in a way that might one day merit the same commendation. Gil's dedication to his faith, family, and country, his visionary leadership in chaplaincy, and his compassionate spirit have left an indelible mark on many. His memory challenges us all to live with purpose, serve with passion, and cherish every moment we are given.
